Salmonella In Eggs

salmonella egg

Let’s face it, over the years eggs have gotten a very bad rap but are one food that always seems to bounce back (albeit not literally) onto the tables of nations all over the world.

In the mid-eighties an outbreak of salmonella broke in the UK causing nationwide panic, governments leap onto the bandwagon closely followed by cries of outrage from the press. It seemed like nothing could massage the publics fear of the egg.

Well, nothing but the taste and versatility of the egg (and it’s resilience).

For thousands of years eggs have been included in the staple diet of almost every country in the world and we can safely assume that one of the first dishes on a caveman’s plate would have been an egg – fried, scrambled or poached we can’t say.

Studies show that eggs are preferred differently from nation to nation and a recent study by Egg Monthly magazine show the following preferences:

UK – Boiled egg
USA – Poached egg
Asia – Scrambled egg
Eastern Europe – Fried egg

Amazing that just like language our particular taste for egg recipes varies from continent to continent and country to country.

So what is in an egg that we so desire? Firstly although it is fragile it has other aspects which provide it hardy qualities such as it is totally waterproof and provides it’s own handy packaging. By it’s very nature it is rich in protein and contains a good source of ‘good’ cholesterol. Add to this it is easy to prepare – a meal with an egg can be made in under a minute but is versatile enough to be oven cooked, grilled and fried.

So when you next sit down to your breakfast, dinner or evening meal (what other ingredient sits happily at any time of day or night?) just remember that everyone from Cleopatra to Jessie Jayne has one thing in common – we all love eggs!

Transportation is one sign that shows a country quality. There are countries with fabulous transportation systems which show high quality of people’s discipline. While disciplines are the key point of advance, countries with such high quality discipline especially is transportation field are heading to a great advance in many other field. For instance, countries with poor facility of transportation will face problems dealing with time efficiency, safety, and most of all comfort.

I myself still feel so much wonder about the scarcity of easy and cheap transportation like electric train in developing countries while the facility can help people a great deal and later will move the economic condition forward. Besides, electric train is a great step to save natural energy and create green living. Therefore, countries must also think about the electric cars and many other important changes. It is also miserable to hear the bad number of victims in transportation accidents due to the bad system of transportation safety. When a country has successfully making a great transportation system, such country is able to accommodate big business and better living for the citizens. It is true and become a real objective of all country in the world. Transportation works that way and keep supporting many purposes of human being in conducting life.

Our history writes that transportation determines how the world makes progress. Only if our world uses sophisticated transportation, can it reach a wider step to a better quality of life. Our transportation however, has also determined the speed and effectiveness of our activity. Simply our technology of transportation helps us as well as accompanies us to reach a great opportunity. Yet, the more issue concerning transportation is the global warming effect of vehicle exhaust. This is a home work fro every country to overcome. Making green living is important but to make a better green transportation is also crucial. Thus, the way out such as the usage of green solar cars or electric cars is extremely needed.

Wild Salmon to be Extinct in 10 Years

Wild salmon in the Broughton Archipelago, off the west coast of Canada’s British Columbia, will be extinct within 10 years due to parasite contamination from fish farms, according to a study published in the journal Science.

“The impact is so severe that the viability of the wild salmon populations is threatened,” said lead researcher Martin Krkosek, from the University of Alberta.

“The probability of extinction is 100 percent,” Krkosek said, “and the only question is how long it is going to take.”

Researchers compared the population numbers of different groups of salmon between 1970 and the present, depending on whether they had been exposed to aquaculture salmon farms or not. Using a computer model of population change over time, the researchers were able to show that exposure to fish farms was causing population growth of wild salmon to be “severely depressed.”

The effect comes from sea lice, a parasite that naturally infects adult salmon in the open ocean. The lice infest the skin and muscle of salmon, and adult fish can carry them without suffering serious harm. Juvenile fish, however, have little defense against such infection and often become seriously sick or die as a result.

“Salmon farming breaks a natural law” by massing adult salmon in large open nets just offshore, said study co-author Alexandra Morton, director of the Salmon Coast Field Station.

“In the natural system, the youngest salmon are not exposed to sea lice because the adult salmon that carry the parasite are offshore. But fish farms cause a deadly collision between the vulnerable young salmon and sea lice. They are not equipped to survive this, and they don’t,” Morton said.

Young wild salmon are exposed to sea lice when they swim past salmon farms on their way from rivers to the open sea.

The researchers concluded that if measures are not taken to stop exposing young fish to sea lice, such as moving fish farms away from the paths of wild fish, wild salmon will be extinct in the archipelago within eight to 10 years.

Klamath River dam and politics

Good news for fish, thanks to heavy politics involving some strange bedfellows.

There is a deal and a plan to remove the 4 nasty Klamath River dams, the ones that harm water quality and salmon and irrigators and fishermen. Just so we don’t forget what’s at stake, the photo at right is from the bad old days of the 2003 fish kill. Ugh.

salmon_dies_dams

These dams block over 300 miles of prime salmon habitat, and some river advocates are calling this the biggest-ever river restoration project. If the money and politics are any guide, they’re right.

The Klamath system could produce a lot of salmon if everything were right with the watershed. The dams are probably the biggest problem, so removal will be a helluva good start on renewing the river, salmon, watershed, and communities.

Hallelujah! There’s more work to be done, to be sure, but each milestone of progress is worth celebrating.

This ad is too controversial? No, says Oregon judge!

salmon on dams

We wanted to run this ad on Portland buses. We wanted to educate Pacific Power ratepayers about the damage that four Klamath River dams could do to their pocketbooks. We were denied. Censored. Tri-Met said we could not run the ads. We asked them to reconsider. They still said no. So we teamed up with the ACLU and filed a First Amendment lawsuit. We think we have the right to run this incredibly non-controversial ad. We think ratepayers have the right to learn more about the Klamath dams. And so does an Oregon judge. On June 3, 2008 FOR won its free speech lawsuit! Read more about the lawsuit.

Will Klamath dams raise your electric bills?

Not all dams are created equal. Some protect people from floods. Some irrigate farms and provide drinking water. Some generate electricity. And some just cost you money.

It’s true: you could end up paying higher electric rates if we DON’T tear down the Klamath dams. Removing the dams could actually save you money.

Pacific Power owns dams on the Klamath River. They generate a little electricity. They provide no flood protection or irrigation water. But they do prevent salmon from reaching over 300 miles of spawning habitat in the upper reaches of the river.

Pacific Power needs a new license for these dams, and in order to get that license it has to bring the old dams up to modern standards. That is going to cost money, and there is no getting around it. Of course, Pacific Power gets to pass those costs on to you, the ratepayer.

Klamath Fishy Bill brochure coverSo what’s the least expensive option?

Experts from Oregon, California, and the U.S. government have compared the cost of updating the dams with such things as fish ladders versus the cost of simply removing the dams. They found that removing the dams could save Pacific Power’s customers approximately $30 to $290 million!

Since the cost of removing the dams is cheaper than the cost of bringing them up to current standards, removing the dams will save Pacific Power’s customers money … and help dwindling salmon populations too!

The Klamath River belongs to all of us, and it is vital to Oregon’s economy, our natural heritage and our history. Pacific Power has made plenty of profits from the Klamath dams, and now they have a responsibility to fix the damage they have caused.

Write a letter now! Tell Pacific Power to stop passing the buck and remove the Klamath dams to save customers money!

Save Canada’s Wild West Coast Salmon from Fish Farm Sea Lice

Categories: News

Raising salmon in ocean pens or cages on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada is bad news for Canada’s wild salmon, and for the Orca whales, eagles, bears and other animals that depend on the salmon for food. The practice, called ‘fish farming’, crowds the caged fish in unnatural and unhealthy conditions which breeds diseases and deadly sea lice that overwhelm the healthy natural salmon in adjacent waters. Canada has the only coast with abundant wild salmon to allow this industry.

Alexandra Morton of the Pacific Coast Wild Salmon Society is leading an effort to get the Canadian  government and the Province of British Columbia to apply the Federal Fisheries Act to ‘fish farms’.

To sign the petition to apply the Fisheries Act to fish farms the way it is applied to fishermen, please click on the link below. The petition is a simple form with the minimum requirements to be effective in the British Columbia’s Premier’s office and with the Federal Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans. If you are inclined, please forward this to others who care about the wild salmon.

Below is an email appeal from Morton and a copy of her letter to the BC Premier and Canada’s Minister of Fisheries. Also included is a recent article in the Toronto Globe and Mail, one of Canada’s leading newspapers. Note that raising fish, also called ‘aquaculture’, can benefit society, but not in the form of ocean net pen feedlots which spread disease. Morton is a biologist who has published on this issue in leading scientific journals including SCIENCE.
